Coordinator for Student Engagement


Location: Hickory, North Carolina 

The Coordinator for Student Engagement is a twelve-month, live-in staff member in the Office of Student Life at Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Hickory Campus, with responsibilities to serve within the on-call rotation for emergencies in the residence halls. The Coordinator for Student Engagement will serve as a front-line staff member for engagement and is sometimes required to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends and works directly with students from diverse backgrounds.

As a Student Life staff member, the Coordinator for Student Engagement will join an experienced, dedicated team who is student-focused and works to promote a safe, welcoming and engaging environment for the campus community. The Coordinator for Student Engagement will report directly to the Director for Student Involvement and Leadership and coordinate efforts for fraternity and sorority life, intramural and club sports and additional programmatic efforts on campus. To enable on-call responsibilities, the Coordinator for Student Engagement is provided with a private apartment with a full kitchen, utilities, cable and internet in a residence hall, a partial meal plan and on-campus parking as part of their compensation package.

The Coordinator for Student Engagement will be responsible for the following:

Intramural and Club Sports

  • Coordinate scheduling, leagues and tournaments, hiring referees, marketing efforts and the upkeep and usage of intramural facilities. 
  • Manage the IMLeagues software to coordinate and manage tournaments and student players and the social media accounts. 
  • Support the development of student referees and new sports in collaboration with Athletics. 
  • Advise and support the development of campus Esports.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

  • Serve as main point of contact for FSL councils (NPC, NPHC, IFC, & Order of Omega). 
  • Assist in the management of the budget and monitor expenditures. 
  • Coordinate recruitment cycles each semester. 
  • Coordinate and create leadership development opportunities for FSL members. 
  • Mediate and resolve conflicts between chapters, councils, and national organizations. 
  • Advise and support FSL campus events, bid days and new member presentations.

Additional Student Engagement Responsibilities 

  • Serve as the primary advisor for the Mortar Board Honor Society. 
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of large campus events (Welcome Weekend, First Six Weeks, Family Weekend, Homecoming, Student Involvement Awards Ceremony, etc.). 
  • Assist with late-night programming for residential students 
  • Assist with any additional programming and advising in consultation with the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership.

Crisis Management 

  • Respond to emergencies in an efficient and effective manner to ensure safety and well-being of residents.
  • On call responsibility for the campus on a rotating basis with other Student Life staff members. This includes providing 24-hour on-call emergency services on a rotating basis. During this time, duties include responding to emergency situations, assisting with life threatening medical issues and going to the hospital with students should an emergency occur.

Required/Preferred Education, Skills and Abilities

  • Completed bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree is a plus, but not required.
  • Some experience with social media required.
  • Experience in student affairs programming and advising of student organizations. 
  • Experience with program assessment, especially in student life, a plus.
  • Experience with residential and engagement software (i.e. Raftr, etc.) a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism and diplomacy and to work with individuals at all levels of the university.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with a heightened attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving/conflict resolutions skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Bilingual Spanish Preferred.

Reporting

  • Reports to the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership in the Office of Student Life at Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Compensation

  • Compensation package includes salary, benefits, private 1 or 2 bedroom/1 bath apartment in student housing with utilities, cable, internet, free parking and a limited meal plan.  

Physical Requirements

  • Some prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.  
  • Ability to attend and preside over events, lectures and meetings.
  • Ability to travel with students, faculty and staff throughout campus and off campus as needed.
  • Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle. 
  • CPR and First Aid certification expected.

Work Schedule

  • Standard office hours M-F 8a-5p, with rotational and occasional evening and weekend work as needed based on job responsibilities
  • Ability to be available on-call as part of a rotational schedule with other Student Life staff
  • Subject to change based on university need, scheduled courses, and university growth
